The Countdown is On: Longines Countdown Clock Launched
The countdown to the UK’s biggest sporting event next summer has officially begun as the Longines Countdown Clock for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games was officially launched at Glasgow Central Station.
The Clock has been commissioned by the Organisging Company and Longines, the Principal Partner and Official Timekeeper for Glasgow 2026. Designed and created by Glasgow-based artist-blacksmith and sculptor Agnes Jones, the design celebrates and reflects Longines’ values of precision, innovation and performance, alongside the bold and creative nature of the Glasgow 2026 Games.
Glasgow Central Station will sit at the heart of the Games, which run from 23 July to 2 August next year, in the middle of an eight-mile corridor of venues used by 3,000 athletes from across 74 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. The Longines Countdown Clock itself will become a central meeting point for fans and visitors, with over 25 million visitors set to see the Clock between now and the end of the Games.
Agnes Jones was selected through a public search by Glasgow 2026 for local artists to design the clock. A single steel line – a nod to the city’s ship building heritage - flows through the 23-metre installation to outline athletes, from across Para and non-Para sport, striving towards the Longines Countdown Clock.
Agnes Jones, who designed the unique sculpture, said: “I was over the moon to get this commission and after months of working on the design in sections, it’s incredible to see the full piece installed in a train station that I've passed through countless times.
“The materials reflect the industrial past of Glasgow, and the subject connects this to the modern, vibrant, international city we see today. I also wanted to reflect the worldrenowned Glasgow crowds and drew clapping and cheering hands in steel to showcase that supportive spirt. I feel so proud to know that it will be seen by so many people.”
Showcasing their sport, home nations athletes Robyn Love (Team Scotland, 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball), Agata Herbert (Team Scotland, Weightlifting), Jamell Anderson (Team England, 3x3 Basketball), and Rosie Eccles (Team Wales, Boxing), officially launched the installation this morning, alongside Ben Callegari, UK Brand Manager for Longines, and senior representatives from Commonwealth Sport and Glasgow 2026.
Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, said: “It’s wonderful to be here in Glasgow as the Longines Countdown Clock is revealed, marking the official start of the journey to the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Longines has been a trusted partner for more than sixty years, and their precision has helped capture some of the most defining moments in Commonwealth Games history. As the clock begins to tick down, excitement is building, Glasgow 2026 is coming into view, and we’re ready to make every second count.”
Robyn Love, Glasgow 2026 Ambassador and Team Scotland 3x3 Wheelchair Basketballer, said: “It’s been fantastic to be here in Glasgow today for the official launch of the Longines Countdown Clock. Seeing the clock and its incredible design displayed in such a prominent part of the city has only increased my excitement for next summer. I’m even more delighted to play a part in the build-up to the Games in my role as an Athlete Ambassador and if I'm given the opportunity to represent Scotland at next year's Games, it would be one of the highlights of my career.”
George Black CBE, Chair of Glasgow 2026 said. “Today is an important milestone for Glasgow 2026 as the countdown officially starts to the Games next summer. We’re thrilled to unveil the stunning Longines Countdown Clock at Central Station. Anges Jones has truly crafted the spirit of Glasgow 2026 to life; bold, creative and inclusive in design and delivery. I have no doubt that it will build anticipation for the Games for the thousands of people who pass through the station each day. This station will sit at the very heart of the Games; a central hub connecting our venues, fans, athletes, volunteers and communities, so there is no better place for this incredible artwork to be.”
Longines is the Principal Partner and Timekeeper of Glasgow 2026, having been first involved with the Commonwealth Games as the Official Timekeeper in 1962. Longines will provide all timing and scoring equipment for the Games next year and is the presenting partner of Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics and Para Athletics.
Patrick Aoun, President and Chief Executive Officer at Longines comments: “We are extremely proud of our partnership with the Commonwealth Games, which extends all the way back to 1962. Longines is looking forward to providing its timekeeping expertise at Glasgow 2026 and to becoming an important cultural landmark in the city thanks to the unique installation at Glasgow Central Station. Longines is continuing to build a Commonwealth Games legacy, together with athletes and sports fans from all over the world.”
Ross Moran, Route Director at Network Rail Scotland, said: "Glasgow is gearing up for another spectacular summer of sport, and the Longines Countdown Clock is the first sign of the buzz and energy we all remember from 2014 returning. The station is at the heart of the city, with around 100,000 people passing through every day. It’s fantastic that they'll all see the clock and feel the anticipation building as the Games draw closer, and we can't wait to once again welcome the world to Glasgow."
